There it lay - snugly wrapped in a cotton cloth, waiting to see the light of day.

Though old now (last I saw it was in January of 2007), it still offered affection and love and some wonderful treats that only close friends can offer.

Looking at it brought old memories rushing back.

Our monthly date every month, not getting enough of each other, our shared interests and excitement... fight against common enemies...

The memories pricked.

I had never let go of my friend. Umpteen requests which turned into dire warnings weren't sufficient to break the bond I shared with my friend.

I must say, my Father helped here. He and I were like partners in crime. Our common enemy - My mom and her want for the ever decreasing space at home!

It was only because of my Father that I could keep my friend at home, months after months, year after years...

A bond that began in 1998...and one that promised to be a lifetime one.

I didn't feel like writing about my friend's slow death. It was painful.

Yet, yesterday, when I got hold of a few old copies and read old and new stories, I decided that the least I could do was to say a good bye.

Dearie, I don't know how to say this. It sounds phony.

Yet, with the most sincere feelings I thank you for enriching the lives of millions.

For being a beacon of hope to me personally.

For your unfailing commitment to quality.

For your never say die spirit and unwavering support to friends.

The doctors don't know if you shall survive. You might face some difficult bouts of illness. Some urgent life saving operations might be required. Only time will tell if you come out victorious.

But for the sake of millions of souls, I pray that you do.

Long Live Reader's Digest !!!
